Hitting a Rapist

by Kath Mauna
(Asturisas Spain)

I am black belt second Dan, I am writing from Spain here we call it like this...Karate Segundo Dan. Spent years in the Gym being hti and hitting people as I say, just because I liked Karate.

I used to come out of the gym almost purple because of the hitting. Meaning that other combatants were taller and normally men who seemed to think they could just "hit" me.

Karate has saved my life. I never thought I would have to use it but when I was almost raped in a park two weeks ago God forgive me because I hit back. Only three moves and the rapist went running away without two teeth.

I have a problem here with what I have done.

For me it is like breaking the code.

Still it saved my life.

One does what they must
by: Anonymous

By any civilized standard, it sounds as if you were morally and legally in the right; some would say that only losing two teeth was not enough.

Be thankful for what you have been able to do through your study of budo and keep training.

You have the right attitude
by: Anonymous

Your attacker was not worried about you, or your feelings. If you are worried about hurting your attacker, don't be. They created the situation, and you reacted in an appropriate manner. Your honour, and dignity are intact, and you should use this as a learning experience. It is not a pleasant learning experience, but try to take something positive away from this. You did what you had to do and may have protected others in doing so, as well as yourself.

No breach of code
by: Anonymous

The code says "There is no first strike in karate". You did NOT strike first. You fought back. You defended yourself and your honour. You have my full respect.

Do Not Be Ashamed
by: Anonymous

Please do not feel ashamed for your actions! Think of the shame you would feel if he HAD succeeded in raping you and you knew that you COULD HAVE fought back but didn't. As the person above me said, he will most likely think twice now before attacking someone. If he had won he would feel even more enabled. I once sprayed an attempted rapist in the face with mace. He tried to pull me off the sidewalk into a large hole in a hedge bush in Venice beach. His pants were already down. I wish I had known karate then.... We learn karate not just for the honor and respect but also for our own personal self defense. My 4.5year old daughter just began her training. I started her young out of fear of what almost happened to you and I. I cannot see her broken in such a way. You did the right thing. Osu!

No Code Broken Here...
by: Sander

Don't worry about the code, self defence is warranted. You didn't just save yourself, you probably saved other girls from this guy too, he'll think twice about trying to rape somebody.
In my book, you didn't break the code, you lived up to it.
You did good, I've got nothing but respect for you.
Osu.
